The reactions to Paul Dacre’s speech, collected in the Guardian today, are well worth a glance. Do glance.
Paul Dacre, editor of the Daily Mail and one of the most influential figures in UK media, doesn’t mince his words when it comes to Mr Justice Eady and the threat to press freedoms. In a speech delivered to the Society of Editors last night (edited version here, full version in pdf here), Dacre lambasts the judge as being “arrogant and amoral” in his various decisions based on Article 8 of the ECHR. Although Dacre doesn’t mention McKennitt v. Ash, it’s obvious that he includes that decision in his view of Eady too, bearing in mind the Mail’s sympathetic attitude towards Niema in the past.
